You don't need the CD or wireless, just better tutorials and plainer
information methinks.

Ok good, then I won't worry about the cd and yes ... I need something like "Networking for Dummies" wonder if there is such a book - I should check on that.

Yes, File and Printer sharing must be enabled,

Did that on a few test folders and the printer.

there must be folders available, every computer must belong to the same
group and have a unique name,

Yes, I have one name for the desktop and one for the laptop and then the workgroup name is the same for both.

firewalls must allow passage, anti-virus
must be configured, XP firewall disabled, etc. etc.

Well, from what I can tell this doesn't seem to be a problem. But then how dumb I am at this stuff I could be wrong.

And you have to reboot every time you make a change, what a pita!

Make a change for what? When do I reboot or will it tell me?

It's worth it in the long run, once you've got it down you'll wonder why
it was so hard in the first place.

I sure hope so because this is nuts that it's so hard for me.

Go here for the specific step you missed above:

http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net-xp.asp

thanks, I'll try that one, too. I tried another one, told me to do everything I'd already done.

Maybe even start at the beginning, I know, I know...more reboots...but
along the way it may be reassuring to know it's being done right step by
step, find other stuff to do while reboots are happening :-)

p.s. I said the IP for your home network range had some "xxx"'s in it,
in Zone Alarm you would be adding a Host Range, from 192.168.0.100 to
say 192.168.0.104 if you had a number of computers on your network. IOW,
don't actually use "xxx", it's got to be a number. Use the instructions
in the tutorial (Start > cmd > ping computername) to confirm each
machine's IP address.

When I put the IP range in I put 192.168.0.000 (which ZA translated on it's own to 192.168.0.0) in the first field and then tried 192.168.0.999 and ZA translated that to 192.168.0.255 so I *think* I got that right and I was to put that in the IP RANGE, correct not just the IP?
