Since you have the plain text passwords, I assumed there was something
in place to capture them before they got encrypted, or the users were
assigned passwords (he's changing the passwords every few months) and
perhaps not allowed to change them. Guess I assumed wrong.
As for this part:

This seems doable (unless I'm assuming too much again). It would require
creating a script to automate the login and change password feature of
the existing application. But then I don't know how the existing app
maintains the logged in state so it could be easier said than done.

If you already have the plain text passwords why do you need to
break the encryption? Just use them to populate a parallel login
