Problem with email notification is that you can't reply by email. You have to visit the forum to post and that's where the system you describe fails for me. I've been doing a lot more traveling the last couple of years. So I read and reply to email frequently on my mobile. Can't do that easily on forums because few are mobile friendly. Even for better devices using Safari or Skyfire or Opera.
Forums have their uses and I even participate in some but not my preference for how I work.
