I find this interesting. I too gave up on webhosting. I saw no way to
do it in a way that sat well with me (using the "reselling route").

But I really think there ought to be a big business in co-location
business (not "reselling" which I find repulsive in many ways).

I currently did a little investigation into colocation in our market:
the midsouth. Most local companies simply had the most barbaric of
ideas regarding colocation. I had the advantage of contacting
above.net which provide me with insight into the business. I was
surprised that one local company simply had never really considered
colocation when setting up their business; they thought all the
business would be in access.

I think there could be a good business for a company that provided
the following:

1. colocation that used above.net as a benchmark (you may not have
the connections but you have the dedication to the business)

2. in case the above does not already make explicit the colocation
company would/must have:

        a. ups/generator backup
        b. multiple local loop and , a must, multiple "backbone loop"
        c. 24/7 support by someone who knows what they are doing
        d. dynamic salespeople who constantly try to sell you more

3. Extensive, active growing website which details everything there
is about how to manage your colocated server. Benchmark iserver.com
who does an excellent job in regards to a virtual server. The
colocation company must put online how to do those things that you
will only do every once in awhile. The colcoation company should be
following the market/technology to keep up-to-date with improvements
and updating their website as needed.

It is that number 3 that I have not been able to find. And I think
that the number 3 will be essential. But hey, maybe I am wrong.

We use iserver for most of our websites. We recently thought of
setting up a server C for running our mail (at US$245 /month for 500
meg and increased cpu/ram). Our accountant showed that we would be
paying US$150 more a month to do this. Our ISP could handle our mail
for the price of the access. Why pay more? Why not just use the
alias file like we currently do? And I had to agree. Essentially
disk space at iserver is US$1.00 per meg.

It would be great if we could colocate in the neighborhood of US$300
per month. So far I find prices starting at US$750.00 per month. I
think this is too expesnive but it seems to be the market price. I
know of some places that will do it for much less (like around US$100
per month but I have absolutely no confidence in them).

I would just be interested in what other peopel think about
colocation and what they are doing about their company's email.
