Thanks for that lead. I have been there before but I must have missed
this. They offer nearly exactly what I was saying. What I didn't
see was online explanations on how to do those things so you don't
need to pay for their system administration packages. I recently
installed sendmail and it was really quite simple. It took me a few
hours because I was checking all the readmes. If there had been a
step-by-step explanation then I reckon I could have done it in 30
minutes or less. I would like to see a checklist of security
warnings: sort of "hey make sure you check your installation so that
this and that cannot occur". Someone like myself who can read and is
familiar with unix could thus do most of the sysadmin work.
As analogy I use iserver. They provide excellent step-by-step
instructions on nearly everything you need to do to manage your
website. This includes configuration options for the apache server,
using the alias file for your sendmail, using the filter/block with
your sendmail, installing rdbms from msql to mysql to postgresql.
And they react to reqeusts for new "help files". A "how do I do
this" will either result in a "look here" or they will develop an
online tutorial/explanation. Now, they don't get to charge US$90 per
hour but they sure do make customer like me happy. I have been with
them for at least 3 years.
