I don't know about getting up to speed. I end forgetting half the 
stuff I learn, but then I open "Unix Power Tools" and it all comes 
back (on one page or another). I have the old edtion and I still use. 
It is one of my must have unix books.

My other source of info is dejanews/usenet. I nearly always find, 
surprise, surprise, that someone else has already asked my question. 
I guess I find about 85% of my answers here (when I don't find them 
in Power Tools.

Log files. If you are on unix already don't forget to look for log 
files; nearly everything gets logged.
