Thanks for the help. That trailing quote was not needed (how odd)
but it did not cause the error.
The server was still NSCA.
It is a server I have hosted with iserver.com. I ran the apache
update and now it all works.
Thanks for sending your original htaccess post but it was not
necessary. I had saved it!
