I thought I would detail the various problems I'm having with Communicator
4.05 on my Mac (UMAX 266MHz G3 system). Let me count the ways...
- while using it, it can give me a "bus error" and forces a system restart
(often)
- it just locks up for no particular reason, freezes.
- it will not properly read my old bookmarks.html file from Communicator on
my PC. This is really wierd: it's about a 250Kb file of bookmarks, but when
I copy it to the Mac and open it in Mac Communicator, partway through the
list of bookmarks they suddenly 'gray out', are not available. I've
examined the html in the file and find huge gaps, hundreds and hundreds of
blank lines, but they do not coincide with where the 'gray out' starts. Go
figure).
- I also find Communicator to be slower than IE in downloading pages and in
loading pages from my hard drive, so slow it's sometimes painful. A web
page on my hard drive that is, say, 40Kb total size (images and HTML) can
take up to 10 seconds to display (I emphasize I'm talking about loading a
local page!). In IE it's just a few seconds. And I'm running a very fast
Mac. There is no excuse for Communicator to be so slow.
I've deleted and reinstalled Communicator and still have the same problems.
I downloaded MS IE v4.01 for the Mac, installed it, and it works fine. And
interestingly, when I tell it to import the Communicator bookmarks file, it
does so perfectly and reads every bookmark correctly.
Apparently Suz is having the opposite experience from me <G>. Your mileage
may vary. Any other comments?
