In part, it depends upon the size of your area and how much
competition you have, but... The "karma" can cost you a LOT more than the
settlement over the long haul. Business is not about one shot deals, it
is about long term relationships. Folks hear about them. It is called
marketing. As O'Gilvey, one of the greatest advertising geniuses, said in
one of his books, what sells is word of mouth. All advertising can do, is
to help seed that word of mouth. If the product is good, the word of
mouth will be good. If the product is bad, good advertising will simply
help sink it faster. What kind of word of mouth do you want about your
company?

Guys like that often don't understand about long term relationships,
except with collection agencies and corporations that have a different
clientele.
You want to be right, and so does your customer. If they are not
real SOB's, (and some they are,) it is often possible to split the
difference. Yes, I've had a few folks in my past who were not satisfied
with my programming. They were clearly wrong, even delusional as to
boolian logic and hardware; but we settled the matter amicably, and in
some cases, got some business from them later. And in others, the person
in question was eventually seen for what he was, and dismissed or
"retired".
(Delusional reasoning is not that uncommon when deadlines loom...
But then, if we did not delude ourselves into thinking we could do the
impossible, we never would... Laughing! 140,000 lives of code in four
months?!!! Yup. Did that with 4,000 lines instead. Boolian logic is
Boolian logic! You can not do the impossible in ways that are impossible.
You have to proof your ideas against reality. The faster you find out
what does not work, the sooner you get to what does.)
Good business is about long term relationships. Folks who know you
are a decent character, and have some capabilities, soon become friends
who share leads and opportunities. Folks who see you as a tough
character, do not; not even if they see you as a very capable worker. That
is why so many so-so guys get a crack at jobs the most capable do not.
So ask if there is a middle ground we can both live with. Sometimes
there is, sometimes there isn't. You won't find it if you don't try.
