BTW, I had a very *nice* lawyer who insisted on two things throughout
the lawsuit I brought against a doctor that had made me very, very
sick. This nice guy insisted that I stick to the unadulterated (and
unembellished) TRUTH, and he insisted I take NOTHING personally.
We won. The jury (yes, it was a jury trial) awarded me a sum (seems to
take a death to get the 1/2 million + awards, the rest are in the
hundred thousand range, especially if, like me, you're pretty darn
healthy after the *hell* is over). The judge then slashed the award by
2/3, leaving me with pretty much lawyer fees and a few pennies left
over. (yes, he can do that!) No reason given, just gave me about 1/3
of what the (unanimous) jury spent hours deciding I should have, and
much of that went to the lawyer. American law. Gotta love it. In 21
days, I should get the settlement (we settled yesterday - talk about
top-of-mind awareness of a discussion!).
Was it worth it for me to bring the suit considering I won't see much
money at all? In this case, the "win" was hearing the jury announce
that the doctor was at fault. Not everything is about money (though I
sure wish I had that other 2/3! <g>).
