When I had my ad agency I reviewed hundreds of resumes. Only one was
memorable, and I would have killed to hire the guy had not another agency
snatched him up first. He was an aspiring copywriter, soon to graduate from
the UNC School of Communications. His resume consisted of approximately 3/4
of one page. Three paragraphs, each headed as follows:
What I Want to Do
Where I Went to School
What I Learned There
It was short, sweet, simple, to the point and totally refreshing. There
were no dates, no "June-August 1985 -- flipped hamburgers at Wendy's." It
broke every rule in the resume book and nearly jumped off my desk clamoring
for attention. All the qualities I've attributed to his resume happen to be
the exact qualities one would want for great ad copy. There are lots of
copywriters out there, but only a handful who can consistently come up with
such innovative concepts that they leave you scratching your head in
wonderment, saying to yourself, "gee, I never would have thought of that in
a million years." Those are the kind of concepts that break through the
media clutter to implant memorable ads in our minds.
The kid also followed through with a great portfolio. He had collaborated
with a fellow student, a graphic designer. They had taken several real ads
and had re-written and re-designed each. All were fresh, innovative and
beautifully designed and written.
I've lost track of the kid, in fact I can't even remember his name. But it
wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that he's a Creative Director in some
big NYC agency making $300,000/year.
