How long does it take to get used to Redhat Linux? ;}
It's really strange... I have spent the past week brushing up on
re-learning Unix, have written a few CGI Perl programs. It is just that
going from Win95/NT and Mac's which hide most of the nitty gritty from
me... and then there is Linux. ;}
Nothing is hidden. Reading the man pages causes my brain to sizzle then
melt out my ear. And trying to do something "simple" like hook up to my ISP
has stumped me in the past week, since there seems to be Perl's "Tim-Toady"
mantra of "There is more than one way to do it" all throughout the whole
OS. I find it wildly amusing! ;} Tried reading 4 different ways to hook up
to my ISP, using 4 different HOW-TO's, mini-Howtos, and even 3 different
versions of X-ISP. Heh. ;}
I am just sitting here, realizing how, just a week ago, I thought "I know
how to install programs!" ... with Win95 or NT, where it meant simply
running the setup program, and pressing a few buttons. Did I know what goes
where? Nope... Might as well said "Elves" when asked "But how does it
work?"
I do love the fact that I can simply use Emacs and try to gaze
absent-mindedly at code and pretend I actually understand it.
Now, for some strange reason, Linux no longer can "see" my CD-Rom drive...
even after a reformatting and re-installation, it still doesn't let me
"mount" the CD-Rom and access the files... Hrm...
Er... does anyone know of any web pages that gears Linux information to
Newbies?
