FWIW - this discussion is occurring simultaneously over on CHI-WEB
(computer-human-interaction-web, and ACM SIG-CHI list). At least one
report of site "redesigned" at 800x600 which received 'backlash' and was
redesigned back to 640x480.

All the reasons for "lowest common denominator" which have been
mentioned here have come up there -- with a caveat that may or may not
have been made here RE the GVU survey: those respondants are fairly
sophisticated net folks, and yet 25% of *them* don't know their monitor
rez -- >>> that "general population" this is even a larger %.
