It really does depend on your market place. Most of my work has been, and
will continue to be, business to business which is where by far the largest
amount of web activity is taking place. Not just internet but also intra-
and extranets.
I just completed a very extensive research progam to determine just how my
market browses the web and boy did I get some surprises. Particularly as
far as the degree of web enablement in corporations of all sizes -much
lower than I'd anticipated. As far as video resolution goes, by far the
largest Australian corporate configuration is 800 x 600. The second largest
group was 640 x 480. Colour resolutions was overwhelmingly 256 with the
rest split roughly evenly between 16 and 24 bit. very few 16 colours still
around.
Obviously this is proprietary research so I can't share the details, but if
you're designing for the b2b market, I'd say the safe standard would be 800
x 600 and 256.
