Nope... don't remember because I never knew, though of course I've
heard this quote and variations on it many times.

SO... I turned to the Web for what turned out to be some intensive but
ultimately fruitless digging. But first I checked my own reference books,
which confirmed that it isn't Biblical, nor Shakespearean, nor locatable in
Bartlett's... away I went.

Checked about 12 "popular quotations" sorts of sites, of which one listed
the quote and attributed it to "Unknown". Searches of major engines,
Usenet, online encyclopedias and so on, drew mostly blanks, though I did
learn that there's apparently a popular rock band called "Land of the Blind"
(speaking of generational differences <g>)

I did come across a sig line from a Usenet archive which referenced the
quote, attributing it to Polyphemus. This sounded vaguely promising, as
Polyphemus was a character in Homer's Odyssey, a Cyclops (son of
Poseidon) who held Odysseus and his men captive until being blinded with
a hot poker. However, I wasn't able to find, either on the Web or
amongst my books, any variant on the quote in question.

So I dunno. I know I've seen a discussion of this quotation in print
somewhere, sometime, but damned if I can remember any details...
anyone else care to delve into the Web and see what they find?
