This leads into a subject I have been thinking about.

I have been charged, by default really, to do the log analysis where
I work. I use some perl scripts and WebTrends. Important to note
that I also configured the web server to give me the logs I want
(simple matter really).

Does it matter that one site sends us 10,000 and another sends us
100? What is the purpose of our site? What do we want from visitors?

Do we want more than just an IP number? Do we want sales? Let's
track who comes from where and what they do when they are on our
site. This is possible. You can get the referer (which is valid in
enough instances), the ip number, date and time. Given that you can
then track that IP-referer-date-time through your site via your log
files.

If we want people to buy from us then we care how many people buy and
not how many people just visit.

Site A sends us 5 people a day and 3 of those people buy.

Site B sends us 300 people a day and 20 of those people buy.

Site C sends us 10,000 people a day and 2 people buy.

It is possible to track what a user does. There should be a lot more
done to get the user to identify himself. What users from Site C
bookmark the site and then come back at a later date? We will not be
able to determine how they got to us. But we will be able to say
that X percent of buyers came to us without a referer ..... ummm...

Tracking the quality of visitors sent is important. It is also
important to define what you mean by quality.
