Well, now that we have the McKinley search engine back on line, we
have another puzzle on the search engines. Massive sustained numbers of
queries on several search engines for SPECfp92. Started at 8pm California
time, and is still going strong at 5am California time, topping the list
on several search engines. That's more than the Sony IR camcorder
incident!
Apparently this is some kind of Floating Point specification, with
only about 5,966 pages matching this spec. I have no idea why it would
spark so much curiosity, particularly when only 814 of them mention Sun
SPARC machines...
Kind of suggests that one ought to find and use specification numbers
in the meta tags... I hate to think what that does to the search engines,
as they probably have to have a large portion of the disk space used by
pages in the real world, at least if they expect to be comprehensive about
it.
It is also interesting that the public went to the search engines
looking for the latest information on hurricane bonnie, the 11th most
popular query last week, when most of the search engines do not seem able
to index pages fast enough to satisfy such public demand.
Linux didn't do that badly last week, ranking as the 112th most
popular query vs 518 for unix and 583 for Windows (98). Link to the
