Going with your gut is a good idea:) One client from hell that I had fought
me on
the copyright statement as well. Eventually she allowed my credit, copyright
and URL to be listed but not a link. Once she had paid me and the site was
on her
server (in another country and with the password changed) she had the credit
and
copyright changed to her name. All references to me were removed (meta and
comments as well). I kept a copy of the site for my portfolio as I always do
and
when I put it online she sent her lawyer after me for violating her copyright.
If she hadn't been so far away I would have thought about murder. Point is
these kind of people are more trouble than they are worth. No amount of
money is worth the aggravation and frustration of dealing with them. Happily,
she is no longer online. Probably didn't treat customers any better:)
I love this job too much to want to have these people muck it up.
Personally, I don't care anymore if a client want to use the images for print,
they are not good enough anyway. If they want rights to the whole shabang
that's fine too, I charge 25% more. I also have a clause that says that I can
keep a copy of the site for my portfolio. I haven't had anyone complain, if
they did and they were decent about it I would just tack on another 24% or
so and forget it. I figure it won't make or break me so who cares? But then
I am pretty laid back, preferring spit and a handshake to a contract:)
