There are a couple of others that I use to create several reports that
I provide on search engines. I forget which ones were faked; metaspy
seems ok, but not as mainstream as some of the others. Some of those
peephole pages are faked, just repeat the same page sequence over and over
on a long loop. Wasn't till I started looking at the keyword statistics
that I saw those didn't seem to change in a reasonable manner, and so
stopped polling them.
I poll several search engines every two minutes, 24 hours a day,
getting about a quarter million to a million queries a week to provide
several free weekly and daily reports on search engine use that you might
find interesting. (Some pages always return the same number of queries,
others return a variable number of queries.) I am always looking for more
peephole and spy pages to query for my reports.
One of the more interesting reports I produce, is the "Nightly Top
3/24". It is relatively worthless for serious web page designers, since
it only tells you the three most common queries of each hour of the day;
but sometimes interesting, as you see how the nature of what people are
interested varies from hour to hour. That makes it great for people
writing about the use of the web and such. Sometimes you see query
spikes, such as the one we had last week for SPECfp92 last week, about ten
hours of heavy activity, followed by a spike in windows performance
queries. I use the Nightly Top 3/24 mostly as a give-away promo. Mention
my search engine statistics site, http://www.mall-net.com/se_report/ in a
mailing list, (as Jack did,) web page, usenet news forum, newsletter,
etc.; send me a copy, and get a free one week subscription.
The other free report, the "Weekly Top 200", is more useful, and easier
to get -- just ask! It lists the top 200 keywords and top 200 queries each
week, along with the number of web pages responding to the keywords on the
larger search engines. Right now, the page number statistics are from
AltaVista, because it is the largest; but I will be adding more web page
numbers, rotating the page counts for three engines per week through the
list. Just e-mail me asking to be put on the "Top 200" list if you want a
weekly copy. Or if enough people really want it on the list, I could toss
the Top 200 to the list each week.
Oh, I finally found out about the misspelling "bestiality" -- it is
the best (worst) of the beastiality. Had to put on "rubber gloves"
(non-graphical browser) to inspect that one! (Laughing!) At least it
keeps them off the streets...
