Uptime and flexibility would suggest some type of Unix based system.
Linux, FreeBSD, SCO, even Solaris come to mind. All can be had on a PC
box. Red Hat Linux 5.1 might not be the best solution, thought Red Hat
Linux 5.0 is rather good. My ISP is using FreeBSD.
