There has been a lot of criticism about Starr's focus on sex, but after
comparing what "he" said with what "she" said, it seems to me there was a
concerted effort to deceive the grand jury. Personally, regardless of the
topic, I am offended that Clinton, a lawyer himself, would purposefully lie
to the grand jury. I am glad that Congressmen are apparently responding
very negatively to his legal hair-splitting on the issue, and doubt they'll
buy this latest spin on the "I didn't inhale" story.
A question for you: suppose Clinton is impeached or resigns, what changes
do you think Gore will succeed in imposing on the Internet? Is it likely
that he'll be able to remain in office long enough to have much of an
impact? Is he behind the Internet tax proposal?
One way to avoid taxation on the 'net might be to move to Oregon. We have
no state sales tax. Here in Ashland we have only a local food, restaurant
and hotel sales tax.
It is certainly a relief not to have that bunch of Nazis at the California
State Board of Equalization breathing down our necks all the time. Just
before I left California, a graphic designer friend was in a major state of
panic. Her elderly mother-in-law had her bank accounts set up so that her
son could sign checks in case she was incapacitated. When my designer
friend fell behind on paying sales tax, the state froze her mother-in-law's
bank accounts. I was really glad to leave and say goodbye to that business
atmosphere. But I didn't escape entirely: four year later, we still
occasionally receive threatening letters from the Marin County chastising
us for not renewing our county business license.
