Someone asked earlier about how processor speeds vary and whatnot.  A
kindly intern just walked into my office with a nice article on the
background on benchmarking (and why it sometimes is irrelevant to the
home user), types of tests used, etc.  Basic, but good . . .

Really like their weekly "Circuits" section.  Some of the more
intelligent (though too "trendy" at times) reporting on the net.
