Yes... when you talk about mainframe it is much more true since 
HW companies used to release special compilers to produce 
"better" code to run benchmarks faster.

Anyway you should do your own benchmark, because you know 
what you need and also change them frequently to avoid "fake 
optimization"...
Of course I think the best benchmark is evryday workload!!
