As with most thing in computer land, there is good news and bad
news. A system with large allocation units will tend to run faster.
However, there is a storage efficiencey problem.
A system with large allocation units will gobble up disk space
faster than me when visiting my local Dunkin Donuts. HTML files (without
the graphics) are typically in the 4K range. If your sytem has
allocations units of 40K you have 36K of wasted disk space per file!
Allocation units tend to increase as disk size increases. (one of
the reasons it's a good idea to partition large - 1Gig+ - disk drives on
Windows 95 systems.) I am currently having a battle with one of my IPP
where I had a domain were they reported 23 megs of disk utilization. When
the installed much bigger drives they way report me at 34 megs and want
to charge me for the next higher storage category. I have a perl script
that recursively traverses a system and produces a nicely
formatted reports showing disk space used by directory and total. In the
above case the actually total disk sizes is only 17 megs.
When looking for an ISP or IPP and they say you have 25 megs of
disk space, or whatever, it would be a good idea to ask how the measure
disk usage.
