and how..

i've installed and configured it a few dozen times, in various places, and
for various reasons.

the latest distribution comes with a FAQ and installation guide which are
both pretty readable. they have good, "now type this in"-style instructions
for compiling & installing the software itself, setting up new lists, and
managing lists once you've gotten all the magic under the hood to *stay*
under the hood.

i'll admit that it helps if you understand Sendmail, because part of the
configuration involves setting up a new alias file to hold all the logical
gizmos which allow majordomo to do its thing. if you speak the language,
you can say, "ah.. they're piping the input to a script, by way of a wrapper
binary". otherwise, the text looks a lot like line noise.

one nice feature of the installation package is a test program which steps
through and checks your homework, to make sure you've gotten all the low
level stuff configured properly. if that give you to go-ahead, the rest
of the package really will run. it also has a good set of error messages
when it finds problems, so finding the glitch is fairly easy.

having just re-read the last two paragraphs, i'm forced to admit that
majordomo is a fairly geek-intensive piece of software, but i do think it's
worth the effort in the long run. the learning curve is steep, but fairly
short. once you understand the way the program thinks, adding, removing,
and maintaining lists is a breeze.
