The AS4/233 I got at OnSale is a 1996 model. In order to get decent
performance with the first Alpha PCI motherboards, they apparently
needed well-honed RAM. One thing you find when you get an Alpha is that
the word "generic" rarely seems to appear on the packaging for the
parts.

It'll be worth it. That box, with RH Alpha 5.1 and a mere 16 megs of
ram runs blinding circles around my PII 233 wintel box with 64 megs.
With 144 megs it should scream.

Oh, for those shopping for Linux and related things, have to recommend
cheapbytes.com. Same stuff major vendors sell, but you can buy the
packages on CD without manuals and support service charges for pocket
change. Picked up the 6 disc RH Powertools disc (all three flavors of
RH 5.1 and 3 gigs of rpms, servers and other toys) for $19.99 ($30
cheaper than RH).

They have a collection too for new Linux people that, if I remember
right, has five or six major releases of Linux (Debian, RH, Slackware,
SuSe, OpenLinux, etc.) and a bunch of tools on one set of discs for
$19.99 or so. Handy if you wanna play with a few before settling in on
one.
