I think he's asking more for recommendations of hardware setup, but
you're right, the key issue is what kind of stuff does he want to run, and
how much activity.
Keep in mind that if you run a Linux server, even a fairly modest
intel box will be quite sufficient for many purposes. Unless you
*really* know what you're doing (and even if you do) I recommend going
with a preconfigured Linux server from VA Research
(www.varesearch.com). They take a lot of the guesswork out of putting
a machine together, and have an excellent reputation in the Linux
community for delivering reliable, well-configured machines.
I'd quote you some numbers, but you're really better off hitting
their web site for them.
