My brother and I are considering buying a WebTV setup for our elderly
father for Christmas and I wanted to ask your advice and opinions about
WebTV, since I've never actually used it. We are looking for an easy,
inexpensive way for Dad to do email, and would like, if possible, for him
to be able to view family photos. I'm aware that our Web design work may
not appear all that hot, but that's not a big deal. Letter-writing will be
first priority.
Dad has a word processing unit, and the instructions for it say that he can
use it for text-based Internet apps like email. But when he calls the local
ISP, they say he has to have Windows 95. And of course, he has no idea how
to argue with them, and my brother and I are thousands of miles away and
unable to help him.
Dad was an electrical engineer and is pretty smart, but he's clueless about
the whole Internet thing. He seems to be feeling left out in the cold
because everytime he calls me or my brother with the latest news, we've
already heard it via email. I'd like to find an easy, painless way to bring
him into the loop.
What would you folks recommend? WebTV or some other route? WebTV, with the
hard drive and keyboard, is $270, and that's stretching our budget. Another
factor that I should throw in is that as an AT&T retiree, Dad gets some
services for free and that may include Internet dial-up, though I'm not
sure.
thanks for help and advice.
