Don't know why you got that error, unless perhaps you were trying to use
the application before it was fully loaded. You mention the page was very
slow... I haven't encountered that problem at the site in the past,
although the author does explicitly say, at the top of the "Using DuoPath"
page:

"Warning: DuoPath will take a little while to initialize so don't be alarmed if
your browser seems to do nothing for 10 seconds or so - just be patient
and it should load up eventually. Although DuoPath does work in Internet
Explorer 4.0, I highly recommend using Netscape 4.0 because it's much
faster." (I've actually found it to be faster than that, myself.)

As for the specific error you got, the variable 'NS4' is certainly defined in
the code: it simply determines whether the user's browser follows the NS
or the IE method of declaring that it supports layers. The code should
work reliably in all versions of 4.x browsers. There's nothing OS-specific
about it. Dunno why you got an error.

This is an error on the author's part, as it turns out. The links to the
lesson on path animation are broken if you try to follow them from the
"Using DuoPath" page; the correct URL is:

    http://www.dansteinman.com/dynduo/path/path.html

can load the utility itself.
