Unless their policy has changed in the last six months, you must have an
account on a web server i.e. a web host before you can complete the domain
name registration process with InterNIC. You can not register a site on your
own without it.
How about free? Hypermart.net will register your domain name for you and
charge nothing for hosting fees. It is a UNIX based shop with FrontPage
extensions.
If you use Bell-Atlantic as your ISP, you will have problems accessing their
site. Otherwise try them. And, you must use your space within 30-60 days (I
think) or the you will lose it. The allowance is generous - 10MB per domain.
So, you could consider getting one domain name and parking or posting the
other sites as sub-domains. Here is a link: http://www.hypermart.net
Beware of web hosts who register themselves as your technical contact to get
your domain name and then refuse to release it if you do not host with them.
There is one popular domain registration name company with whom I had such
an experience.

Hello Net Citizens,

I need to host a few domain names for a few of my my college buddies.
Only, every local company wants to charge 25.00 dollars for monthly
hosting and setup charges of 50.00 dollars. What should we do?

We just want to store our domain names on a server that doesn't want
to bleed us dry. We know how to sign up with InterNIC and therfore
don't need a company to do this for us. But could someone please refer
me to a virtual web hosting site that will not charge outrages sums of
money for setups and monthly costs?

Please advise,
Lazyfish
