Guess I gotta keep up to date on my Berst reading...cracks me up to hear him
say that. The ICQ/Mirabilis site has been a frightening experience for me
almost every time I've had to go there. It's the kind of site that, every
time I have to go there, I cross my fingers as the page starts to load,
hoping it's been revamped.

Actually, they are quite different. PCAnywhere, by Symantec, is designed to
be a "remote control" app that allows you to control a PC remotely, via a
direct dial-in connection, tcp/ip, some other network protocols or (and I
have not tinkered with this) via a browser plugin.
When you connect to the PC that is going to be "remote controlled", you see
an image of the remote screen on your local PC. You can click the buttons,
type, run apps, save files, etc, on the remote PC from the local PC. At the
remote PC, if the monitor is turned on, you can actually see the mouse
pointer moving around, text being typed, menus being used, etc. This will
allow 2 people to work together on the same doc...as long as one person
stops working while the other makes changes. OTOH, many people just use
PCAnywhere to control their own PC from elsewhere...control Office PC from
Home, while on a trip, etc.
PCAnywhere, at least the versions I've used, don't really have messaging or
chat built in (ICQ's forte) - but you can sorta simulate a chat by just
opening notepad and keeping it on top.

A relatively new, related Symantec product is pcTelecommute:

I have not tested it.
A similar product to PCAnywhere is Timbuktu. They have some slick Mac/PC
capabilities that PCAnywhere doesn't have. There have been other products
like PCAnywhere around for a long time...many of which I haven't heard much
about over the past 2-3 years.
