ICQ is really cool. If you're familiar with AOL's chat and instant
messenging modes, it's almost identical, but not restricted to AOL users.
Anyone can use it and it's free.
I use it all the time, particularly with a client in California who is also
an active member of the WC list. We chat with each other about our ongoing
project several times a day and only rarely resort to long distance
telephone calls. Once we even managed to conference ICQ between him, myself
and my husband's computer, though I'm not sure how we did it.
You can download a free copy from www.Mirabilis.com (nominated by Jesse
Berst the other day as the ugliest site on the Internet, with my
agreement). Supposedly it's similar to PCAnywhere, if you're familiar with
that service.
ICQ was recently purchased by AOL, but I haven't noticed any change in the
service.
You register a screen name with ICQ and are assigned a number. Give that
number to your friends or associates, then they will be able to find you if
you're online and have ICQ turned on at the same time. If so, you and they
can exchange instant messages or can chat. (You can also flag yourself as
"online away" or "online private."
My only complaint about ICQ is that the Mac software is way behind the PC
version.

give you my ICQ number. btw, I don't recommend putting your icq number in
your sig as I did for awhile, as it will likely result in unwanted
contacts. Keep it private.
