As I recall, the ATT version of UNIX, at one point, had a built-in
back door generator put there by one of the guys who designed it. It was
built into the assembly/compilation system to insure that any rebuild on
any machine would generate a back door for the author.
When ATT discovered it during a major revision, they grilled the
author for about two weeks behind closed doors. However, he wasn't, how
should I put it, low enough on the totem pole to easily fire, nor
inconsequential enough in the UNIX community to fire without a MAJOR black
eye for ATT.

Oh? I think there were some major changes from that region PRIOR to
building The Great Wall. I seem to recall something about their emperors
having substantial Mongol blood. The early comers just wanted to keep
the late comers away from a good thing. That's about par for the course,
no matter where you go. (But I could be wrong about the timing of that.)
