as an additional 2 bits, Mac-to-Mac networking is awfully simple.   find a
low-cost ethernet hub, connect both machines to it, and turn file sharing
on from the Chooser in each machine.

there *are* some complexities in setting up users, groups, sharing
permissions, and that kind of thing.   you only have to deal with them if
you want to restrict access between machines, though.   if it's a private
network, where the user can be assumed to have complete rights to
everything on both machines, you can just say "share everything", and it
works.

if you're using 100Mb/s ethernet (probable), bandwidth between the two
machines should be nearly as high as the bandwidth between the older Mac
and its hard drive.   there won't be much visible loss of performance due
to the networking.
