   It is a big joke. I do a lot of contracting. By the time the job
passes through personnel, no one knows what is really needed, and the
personnel folks have added another layer of misinterpritation and needless
requirements based upon their misinterpritations. Most of the jobs that I
get via shops are not for what the spec called for, use skills other than
what was requested, etc.

     Best way is to call. And if you only called 50 companies... you did
very well. See http://www.mall-net.com/webcons/coldcall.html and related
files for the way I handle all that stuff.

     Do look at the above files for the math of telephone vs in-person
calls. In-person is just not feasible:
    * time spent moving the body
    * resistance to seeing anyone useful,
          fear chatting in person will take THEM too long
    * established policies that lead you to personnel
    * function of personnel: keep people out by qualifying/categorizing
    * time to fill out personnel's excessive redundant forms
    * fatigue from tromping about
    * visibility of fatigue on your face
    * discouragement
    * cost of gas
    * time spent preping, dressing up, etc

   Compared with phone calls:
     * fast
     * both sides can back out fast w/o embarassment
     * So what he's a jerk! NEXT!
     * So what it's the wrong kind of job! NEXT!
     * impersonal and short chats
     * people more helpful as fewer established policies
     * people are more willing to talk at length over the phone

     If you or anyone is considering looking for a job, take a look at
http://www.mall-net.com/webcons/coldcall.html and related
files. I've been contracting for over 20 years.

     And if you have a better way, or hints to add, PLEASE, do let me
know!

     I would find it interesting to set up a database system many of us
could use, since mot of the jobs we find by cold calling, are not the ones
we can fill. By sharing the search and the jobs, we could turn over more
stones in a day than any one of us could turn over in a week!
