Okay, here's a question that goes more to the "consultants" side of the
list then the "web" side necessarily. I've done a little bit of
freelance work before on a fairly informal basis. It was a nonprofit
organization and a noncommercial site, very low stress. I now have a
potential client interested in starting a web business, who is serious
enough to have already secured a domain name and some clients. As far as
I know, I'm the only person they're currently talking to, although
they've talked to some others before.

I'm now at the point of preparing a proposal for them which will outline
my idea for the technical approach, as well as a statement of the
relationship between them and myself. So I'm asking the list for
thoughts about the relationship aspect of the proposal. Should I try to
make it an hourly work arrangement, or should I avoid that at all costs?
I offered them the chance to ask me to just build a site and then go
away, but they're interested in my being involved with their business
for the long term. But if this site takes off, it's not going to be a
one-person-in-his-personal-time job, it'll be a full time job for a
staff of people (hopefully!) I know this list contains a depth of
experience about questions like this, so I'd be interested in what you
have to say.

I also interested in your recommendations ofd any useful consulting
references -- a friend of mine who has been a consultant already has
suggested "Consulting for Dummies" (really!) Any others? (on- or
off-line?)
