thanks to Kieran and Mark (from the Spiderwoman list), who both spotted the
apostrophe in America's as the culprit. Mark suggested a \ before the ' and
it works perfectly. Kiernan also had an alternate solution which would
probably work fine too, but one solution is all I need.
