Mm. Last week I e-mailed an invoice to a client, and as usual in those
circumstances, I toggled "confirm receipt" and "confirm reading" in my mail
client. (Just a little extra assurance in case the client says weeks later,
"Sorry, never got it.")
Anyway... forgot to toggle those back off again, and then sent a post to
WC. Which means that everyone on the list whose servers/clients honour
"confirm receipt" requests sent me back a response. And boy, was it
interesting to note how long it took some servers -- especially those in
more out-of-the-way parts of the world -- to reply.
The first batch started arriving within minutes, as you'd expect. Then
another surge after about half an hour. A few more a couple of hours
after that... and a full half-dozen or so that didn't arrive until the next
day, at least 24 hours later!
That was an eye-opener. Kinda reminded me of my days back on Fidonet,
when "express" e-mail meant same-day delivery, more or less. And I had
to pay for any LD charges involved :)
So anyway -- yes, a script that waited for replies from servers to confirm
valid addresses would be problematic, I suspect.
