Listserv is a commercial product which dates back to BITnet days and
which is horribly broken is several ways: for example, it wants
subscriptions to be submitted in the form:
subscribe mailing-list rich kulawiec
instead of the more functional
subscribe mailing-list [EMAIL PROTECTED]
There's more, like various bits and pieces of BITnet/mainframe brain
damage that still persist in it, non-standard syntax and semantics,
broken authentication mechanisms, and so on, but briefly: it's an
overpriced antique. Avoid it at all costs.
Majordomo is open-source software which does a much better job of
complying with real and de facto Internet standards; it's also free.
Further, it's under constant development -- version 2.0 is in the
works -- and thanks to Bill Houle, it has a nifty web-based front-end
called "majorcool".
There is absolutely no question in my mind that majordomo beats the
pants off listserv (and listproc) already; when 2.0 comes out, I
expect it to make obvious to everyone what is already obvious to me,
and that is that it is THE choice in mailing list management software.
