        Word 97 allowed you to enable or disable the auto execute of macros. 
However, it may not always work as it appears there is a way to bypass
the switch.

        Realistically, as long as you are dealing with the M$ Office product
line and the ActiveX controls, macro viruses are a fact of life. 
"Flexibility and inter-operability" have been incorporated into the
product line.  With that comes the reality that you can e-mail a
document with an Active-X control that will format the addressee's hard
drive.
