Three reasons:
1. The vast number of submissions.
Lots of peopel submit over and over and over. Hence some
search engines add a delay before adding, so that you can't
experiment too much with keywords and web position monitors.
2. Bandwidth, Hardware, etc. and the fact Google are new. It can
take several months to crawl the web now, even with a few T3's
3. They may actually have a threshold value, below which they
don't index you -- and it may take a while before they
find enough other sites indexing YOU, to have a meaningful
rank for your site.
I forget where I heard that one of the major engines had not been
accepting new URLs for several months. Yahoo, being a directory, won't
even bother indexing some submissions. Yet we do get a lot of hits from
them for what they do index, _IF_ it is popular.
A few months ago, I submitted a page to one of the Submit to 800, or
some such number of engines. Got a lot of spammage from various places,
but after a week, zero hits. Did that to a reputable top ten or so
outfit, and after a few robot visits, Zero hits again!
As to Excite being worth 6billy-bucks... They sure have a lot of
trouble for someone worth that much! We monitor them and a number of
other engines. They have the highest downtime of the lot, even to the
point of mixing up which engine should respond to which URL. Latest
message from them is one involving a permissions error on a log file, Been
that way for over a week. Had to install a filter to purge that phrase
from our statistics.
I do wish Excite luck, and am glad to hear they are worth that much
to someone. (I've got some better search technology, which I have run for
a few clients on an experimental bases. Anyone care to float me some
venture capital?)
