IP masquerading in general works by creating a low-level proxy on the
masquerading server. the proxy takes requests from machines in the local
network, passes copies on to the internet, catches the reply, and sends a
copy back to the machine in the local network.
for simpler protocols, it's often possible for the proxy to parse the
request and rewrite it, which provides a certain measure of
sanity-checking, and endless potential headaches for someone who wants to
push funky requests through the proxy. for complex protocols like ICQ,
the proxy coders generally use the brute force method and write a pure
tunneling proxy.. one that takes data from either side and passes it
through without any checking at all. it's fast, and works, and is about
as elegant as a petrified cow pie.
for a home dialup system, a generic masquerading proxy should be no
problem. for a network which is connected continually, you may as well
hang a sign on the ethernet card saying "WaReZ d00dZ EnTeR HeRe!!"
they're massive security holes, and any network manager willing to trade a
hole that big for a quick & easy implementation needs a few amps across the
earlobes.
