Well, i did the upgrade thing and installed OS8.5 on my 7600 PowerMac
(255mhx/128RAM/2Gig/9Gig).

First alert for those who are going to upgrade:
even though I had been told to do this, i forgot! Export your PPP settings
-- because 8.5 uses "Remote Access" to combine what PPP & RA did before.
[frankly, i think that's confusing, but i'm an oldtimer]. And RA doesn't
"read" your old PPP preferences ... so any setups (my different dial up
numbers for NWNexus & Mindspring plus the mail server, DNS settings, etc)
disappear into the ether.

Second - remember to back up the old system preferences & any control
panels/extensions, fonts, etc. from software installed after your last OS
setup. [this i always remember to do - since i didn't do it once eons ago!]

NOW - having done this - and I haven't installed the patch 8.5.1 yet (I
downloaded it last night but it's - i hope - on the old system disk which i
haven't stuck in my external scsii box yet) - what about performance?

It Feels Faster. Windows snap open faster, OS launches quicker, apps seem
faster. Mail download seems faster. I forgot to run MacBench on the old
system (8.1) so that i could do a comparison. but i plan to run it on 8.5.1
when i finish all this later today.

OH - and it's not running faster because I put the system on that really
really faster IBM ultra-scsii disk <g> .. I kept the system on the 2 gig
quantum that i've had since i got the 7600 in july of 96.

And oh - with all the crap I have in my control panels/extension - the OS
comes in at 28 MB of RAM <eek> so a 32 MB system is probably sqeaking by
these days. of course, that's the same with Win98 - you really need 64 mb
there, too.

May be time to add a couple more 16 MB chips, since they're cheap cheap --
i think i still have two slots.

The Internet Setup is straightforward for newbies ...

What else? new desktop patterns ... new sounds (so your Mac can sound like
a Wintel PC), no animated cursors though <g> ....

OH - one more thing - with the old system, it refused to set my 21" monitor
as "primary" even tho that was how I had it configured on monitors control
panel - and it's plugged into the on-board video card, not the pci
addition.

start up w/cd 8.5 and voila, the 21" is the primary. and it stuck after
setup. Yeah!
