What we need is always entirely dependent on the client's needs. They range
from business/personal site clients who need barebones, inexpensive virtual
domain hosting to clients who need sophisticated ecommerce and/or
database-driven sites.

If I were starting up my own hosting service this week, I would look at
creating a niche for myself in ecommerce. I would search for ways to make
ecommerce *easy* and flexible, with well-designed, easy to implement,
customizable shopping cart and credit cart verification solutions.

Ask me next week, and I might tell your something entirely different.
