when in doubt, stall.. the reason not to use Java at this time (and there's
legitimacy to this, despite its utility as a dodge) is that Microsoft is
far from done challenging Java's existing and future positions on the web.
Sun was awarded a preliminary injunction against MS on issues of
compliance, but that case has not yet been brought to trial AFAIK. even
if it has gone to trial, there's still the question of the appeal.
IE holds a major chunk of the browser market at this time, and is generated
by a company which would like to adapt the Java API from "write once, run
anywhere" to "write once, run under the latest version of Windows or face
serious and undocumented porting problems".
Java has the potential to be very useful, but not until the dust settles.
even then, only one of the two possible outcomes will offer any chance of
reaching that potential. the technology is still too new, and has been
artificially made too unstable, to trust in general-use web applications.
if that doesn't shut them up, give them a set of unbiased quotes for the
kind of programming they want, done from scratch, and guaranteed to work on
a sufficiently large percentage of browsers. the downside of playing with
the latest toys is that you end up having to pay for them. the cutting
edge cuts both ways.
