Hi,
I had an experience the other day that I was just reminded of when reading a
post in the "writers" thread...
Around 10 months ago I had a client who called me on the phone and said he
was having a hard time getting to the new web site that I had built for him.
He said he was typing in "http://www.hisdomain.com", but the site wasn't
coming up. Hmm, very strange, I thought. I tried it on my browser while I
was talking to him and it came up, no problem. "Are you sure you're typing
it in right", I asked. "Yeah"...and he repeated the address back to me as he
typed it in...
..everything seemed right...
I asked the usual questions: what browser are you using? Are you connected
to the net? What ISP are you connected with? etc....and all seemed in order.
Finally, I asked him what he was looking at on his screen...
...the answer: "AOL Netfind"...
Um, OK....(I'm thinking...)..."so where exactly are you typing the address
in?"
He says, "right next to where it says 'Search the web'"......
ugga bugga!
Wellll, I gently told him that he was typing his new domain into a search
engine and that the best place to type it was in the little white box near
the menu bar of his browser, which would take him directly to his site. I
also explained a bit about the function of the text box he *had* been trying
to type it in and explained search engines a bit...
....OK, flash forward 10 months...to yesterday. Same thing, new customer...
...this time the customer is starting Netscape, getting the Netscape
Netcenter default home page, selecting "Excite" from the search engine list
and typing in his domain name. Then he calls me up and says when he "clicks
the first link" (I dunno what it was) he is getting "server not found". <g>
He tried the "other link, the one with the 33%", but that didn't work
either....
The "33%" part tipped me off.... ... ... .. .
So, in case you hear a customer say this kind of thing over the phone, may
this anecdote ring a bell for you...
Jack
