watch seattle closely -- it's in the middle of renegotiating its contract
with TCI for cable service. TCI has abysmally failed to meet its contract
on upgrades/expansion.
seattle city council *says* it wants TCI/ATT to allow other ISPs access to
cable customers. the current proposal (i don't know the author, probably
TCI/ATT) would provide access -- but the customer would *still* have to pay
the full @home fee!
surely, with telephone deregulation (and electricity right around the
corner) we have figured out a way to 'charge rent' for the fixed asset
investment (line, wire, poles, etc.). why can't this model apply to cable?
there was a 3/4 page ad in Friday's Seattle Times by a "open access" group
... I have to do some investigation. but I wrote my 'canned' letter to all
Seattle City Council members -- because how they decide will affect the
rest of us in King County (exclusively served by TCI now -- just many
different contracts and services, ie, channel offerings).
