Yep, that's about right.
I have here (points across the room) a 9-year-old Sun SparcStation 2
running Linux and Apache. It's four generations behind their
currently-shipping machines. It cost $150 via a Usenet newsgroup,
plus another $100 or so for some more memory and disk. The OS was free.
The web server was free. It will be "operated", not that it really needs
to be, via an ASCII terminal ($60) which is just to boot it up and shut
it down.
It is going to go replace $6K worth of brand-new PC hardware and software,
simply because (a) it's faster and (b) it doesn't crash four times a day.
The people I'm doing this for have uselessly wasted several thousand
dollars on hardware and software plus several thousand dollars on
consulting to make it work plus the lost time and inconvenience. Given
that they're a non-profit, this stings. I figure they're out about $10-15K
because they tried to do this with NT & IIS instead of using the
vastly superior technology available with Linux and Unix.
Oops.
The really sad part is that they are not alone. I just read a followup
article in Network World about this idiot at BYU who -- in an earlier
article -- lamented the abysmal state of his all-NT network. In this
one, he's now being lauded as a hero 'cause for only $50K or so he managed
to band-aid it enough to work. I'd fire him on the spot for being stupid
enough to even try this in the first place, and then stupid enough *again*
to not realize that he should have bailed out rather than pouring more
money into a lost cause.
And people think the Unix/Linux crowd are the crazies.
