Yes, this is a good idea.  I have been thinking the same thing.

I am working at a place where the intranet just displays the local 
newspaper site.

I am envisioning the same sort of idea: let each person customize the 
home page (at least the major frame).

One thing is to let them enter keywords/phrases to search at 
websites.  Perhaps put in the names of websites to check if they have 
changed since their last visit there (check on competition).  This 
can be done with the great Perl module LWP; and it can be done at 
night -- or those 2 features can be available on demand at any time 
via a form.

Ummm... what else, in a sort of markety vein.?  A link to what the 
weather is where if people travel (just a simple pull down of 
city/state or zip code) -- for those traveling.
