I bought an external 2x4 Philips CD-R from APS about 3 years ago in order to archive
files on an Apple Workgroup Server. I did use Toast and was very pleased with the
software and the drive itself. I remember the ability to burn multisession CDs was
important to me at the time. I also recall that only a Mac could burn hybrid CDs that
were readable by both Macs and PCs. The APS catalog and their tech support were both
very helpful. Of course, a lot of things may have changed since then. It been 2 years
since I retired from the LAN SysAdmin role in order to focus on the Web, say
hallelujah.
Our CIO moved our Mac users to an NT server. I believe he is using the Philips CD-R
elsewhere on a PC now. Last time time I asked, he said it was working great.
Five years ago, it was common to send out huge files on 200 MB Syquest cartridges. The
cartridges would always come back, as they cost about $100. These days, everyone uses
$15 Zip cartridges, but they never come back. My suggestion is to burn $5 CDs and tell
the recipient to toss them when they're done. My logic is that a $5 disposable CD
costs less than a courier return trip anyway. I try not to think about CDs buried in
landfills for 500 years.
I think you will find many adequate hardware solutions out there. I recommend you
concentrate on finding the exact software that meets your needs.
